Dancing forces you to engage multiple muscle groups and hold your posture. It also requires controlled movements that strengthen muscles you might not use in daily activities.

If you join a dance school in Ottawa, you’ll probably be doing quick steps, lifts, twists, and turns. They all require your muscles to work hard, especially your legs, core, and arms. 

We have students from all kinds of backgrounds and ages, even those who are 90+, and many of them come to us for one simple reason.

They’re not moving enough, and they want their strength and mobility back. 

Just not by dragging themselves to a boring gym. What warms our hearts is seeing how it becomes the alternative they actually enjoy. The one that keeps them motivated and coming back.


Can Dancing Improve Bone Health in Senior Women?

As we age, bone health becomes a bigger concern, especially for women. Bones lose density, which can increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. 

The good news? 

Weight-bearing activities like dancing may help more than you think.

And we’re not saying that for no reason. One study followed women in their late 60s who danced about three hours per week. 

What they found is the following: Women who started with lower bone density (including those with osteoporosis) showed improvements in spinal bone health after a year of dancing. Those who already had healthy bone density were able to maintain it, which is just as important.

So if you’re experiencing bone health, why not try dancing?

Dancing doesn’t rely on high impact or extreme effort, and the most important part: it’s fun!

Here at Fred Astaire Dance Studios Ottawa, we like to warm up our bodies before we start dancing. As in any sport, your body has to be warm, or else you might get injured. 

These stretches help loosen your muscles and joints, which will improve your range of motion with time.

Many adults start dancing without a partner.

You’ll be paired with an instructor in 1-on-1 sessions, and you’ll dance with other students in group lessons.
